Images for Decolonial Futures: Antillean Continent

Maps have served as tools for geographic, cultural, historical, and political documentation; at the same time, they have limited, conditioned, and simplified social plurality, particularly in the Caribbean, where cartography continues to fragment the archipelago through its colonial legacies.

Images for Decolonial Futures: Antillean Continent presents an alternate reality—the islands of the Antilles connected as a single geographic territory. From this union, four maps are created that engage concepts found in Édouard Glissant’s Poetics of Relation, ideas surrounding the Antillean Confederation proposed by Ramón Emeterio Betances, and even the mythical island of Antilia.

Juan Carlos Rodríguez and Claudia Alejandra González Parrilla expand the definition of maps to propose readings of the present and speculative futures, with the intention of continuing to share collective imaginaries, aspirations, and projections both within and beyond the gallery.

Los mapas han servido como herramienta de registro geográfico, cultural, histórico y político, al mismo tiempo han limitado, condicionado y simplificado la pluralidad social, particularmente en el Caribe, donde la cartografía continúa fragmentando el archipiélago por sus legados coloniales.

Imágenes para futuros decoloniales: Continente antillano presenta una realidad alterna—las islas de las Antillas enlazadas como un solo territorio geográfico. Desde esta unión, se crean cuatro mapas que trabajan conceptos incluidos en el texto Poética de la relación de Édouard Glissant; ideas sobre la Confederación Antillana, de Ramón Emeterio Betances; y hasta la mítica isla de Antilia.

Juan Carlos Rodríguez y Claudia Alejandra González Parrilla, expanden la definición de mapas para proponer lecturas del presente y futuros especulativos, con la intención de continuar compartiendo imaginarios, aspiraciones y proyecciones colectivas dentro y fuera de la galería.

Antillean Geography / Geografía antillana

Antillean Geography is a piece that takes as its point of departure the image “Caribe Antillano” from Cuaderno No.1 Puerto Rico: Imagination and Possibilities, created by Juan Carlos Rodríguez and Claudia Alejandra González Parrilla in 2023. In this work, the islands of the Antilles are articulated to form a single geographic territory. This cartographic gesture offers a literal interpretation of Ramón Emeterio Betances’ proposal for an Antillean Confederation, Édouard Glissant’s vision of solidarity as a unity that grounds the idea of a shared future, and the mythical island of Antilia. Presented through three layers that converge into a single image, the work proposes an expansion of what is defined as a cultural, geographic, historical, and/or political region by challenging the institutionalized political map.

Geografía antillana es una pieza que utiliza como punto de partida la imágen “Caribe Antillano" del Cuaderno No.1 Puerto Rico: Imaginación y Posibilidades creado por Juan Carlos y Claudia Alejandra G.P. en el 2023. En esta pieza, las islas de las Antillas se articulan para formar un único territorio geográfico. Este acto cartográfico interpreta de manera literal la propuesta de la Confederación Antillana de Ramón Emeterio Betances; la visión solidaria de Édouard Glissant como una unidad que cimenta la idea de un futuro compartido; y la mítica isla de Antilia. Presentada a través de tres capas que convergen para crear un solo visual, la obra propone expandir lo que se define como región cultural, geográfica, histórica y/o política, al desafiar el mapa político institucionalizado.

Antillean Hydrography / Hidrografía antillana

Antillean Hydrography uses the geographic union created in the piece Antillean Continent to explore the connection between the bodies of water within this new continent. The work begins as a literal representation of the existing rivers across the islands of the Antilles, but shifts toward abstraction with the intention of not only documenting the current river network, but also imagining it as extended and unified, functioning as the circulatory system of this new body. The piece is conceived through the concept of lines and flows, drawing inspiration from the practices of Francis Alÿs, Shannon Rankin, and Tauba Auerbach.

Hidrografía antillana utiliza la unión geográfica creada en la pieza Continente antillano para explorar la conexión entre los cuerpos de agua del nuevo continente. La obra comienza como una representación literal de los ríos existentes en las islas de las Antillas, pero deriva hacia lo abstracto con el propósito de no solo registrar la red fluvial actual, sino también imaginarla extendida y unificada, funcionando como el sistema circulatorio de este nuevo cuerpo continental. La pieza se concibe a partir del concepto de líneas y flujos, inspirada en las prácticas de artistas como Francis Alÿs, Shannon Rankin y Tauba Auerbach.

Antillean Termology / Termología antillana

Antillean Thermology situates us within the Antillean Continent in a speculative future that records the temperatures of the year 3025. The projection is based on the mathematical formula Tf = To + (N × 0.35°F) which uses the approximate data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) regarding a projected increase of 0.35°F per decade. Inspired by El montón de basura from the Montessori Cosmic Curriculum, and through an exploration of ephemeral materials and everyday elements, the work documents projected extreme heat conditions. The piece also functions as a warning about environmental impact, the current effects of climate change, and how the Antillean Continent might confront these conditions in the future.

Termología antillana nos sitúa en el Continente antillano, en un futuro especulativo que registra las temperaturas del año 3025. La proyección se basa en la fórmula matemática Tf = To + (N × 0.35°F), que utiliza el dato aproximado de la National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) sobre un aumento de 0.35°F por década. Inspirada en la presentación El montón de basura, del currículo cósmico Montessori y a través de una exploración de materiales efímeros y elementos de la cotidianidad, la obra documenta el calor extremo proyectado. Además funciona como una advertencia sobre el impacto ambiental, los efectos actuales del cambio climático y cómo los enfrentaría el Continente antillano en el futuro.

Antillean Sonology is an abstraction of the auditory landscape that emerges from the union of lands, water currents, and rising temperatures within the Antillean Continent. Does it sound like the sea, a rushing river, suffocating silence, digital noise, or a plurality of rhythms that have finally merged? The piece is constructed from fragments, reverberations, and edited imagery from each island of the Antilles, captured by satellites from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) over the past five years. This work moves beyond the visual to propose an auditory experience as the final and intangible form of a speculative Antillean perspective.

Sonología antillana es una abstracción del paisaje auditivo que emana de la unión de las tierras, las corrientes de agua y las temperaturas elevadas en el continente antillano ¿Suena a mar, a río caudaloso, a silencio sofocante, a ruidos digitales, a una pluralidad de ritmos que finalmente se han fundido? La pieza se construye a partir de fragmentos, reverberaciones e imágenes editadas de cada isla de las Antillas, capturadas por los satélites de la National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) en los pasados cinco años. Esta obra trasciende lo visual y propone una experiencia auditiva como la información final e intangible de una mirada antillana especulativa.
